Personal Independence Payment (PIP) provides crucial financial assistance to individuals aged 16 up to State Pension age who incur extra costs due to over 500 health conditions or disabilities. These can be physical, sensory, mental, intellectual, cognitive, or a combination of these challenges.
As of January, more than 3.9 million people in Great Britain were receiving PIP, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Beneficiaries can receive weekly payments ranging from £30.30 to £194.60, aimed at helping with daily living and mobility expenses.
Significantly, being awarded PIP can enable claimants to access additional means-tested benefits they might not have previously qualified for. Current government guidance highlights that some benefits can even be backdated to the start date of a PIP award, potentially increasing the support available.

PIP serves as a “passport” to other benefits such as Carer’s Allowance, Carer Support Payment, and various schemes run by other government departments including the Blue Badge scheme. While many benefits have their own eligibility rules, certain schemes, like the Blue Badge, allow access based on PIP status regardless of the rate or component awarded.
The DWP shares information between departments to help claimants automatically gain access to other disability benefits and services. However, claimants are advised to notify other benefit offices of their PIP entitlement to ensure they receive the correct amounts and to report any changes in their circumstances.
To confirm eligibility, claimants typically need to present their PIP award letter. Carers may also be eligible for Income Support, including for up to 26 weeks during the PIP assessment process, and potentially beyond once PIP is granted.
The DWP encourages all claimants to explore what additional benefits they might be entitled to. While not everyone will qualify for all benefits, checking eligibility ensures that no one misses out on vital support.
The current weekly payment rates for PIP components, which include Daily Living and Mobility, took effect from April 6.
