Drunk Driver Crashes Through Live Investigation Site, Collides with Cones and Mannequin

A 42-year-old man from Yatton Keynell has been banned from driving for 12 months after being caught driving under the influence through a live crash investigation site. Richard John Payne ignored a clearly marked road closure on Tuesday, September 9, weaving through the collision reconstruction area and striking traffic cones and a mannequin used in the investigation.

Swindon Magistrates' Court heard that Payne’s breath test revealed alcohol levels well above the legal limit. He recorded 58 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath on the roadside—exceeding the legal limit of 35 micrograms—and 44 micrograms in custody.

Payne pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and was fined £300, with additional charges including a £120 surcharge and £85 court costs. His 12-month driving ban can be reduced by three months if he completes a rehabilitation course.

Police expressed shock at the reckless behaviour. PC Paul Brewster of the Serious Collision Investigation Team said, “After 18 years in policing, few things surprise me, but this incident left me in total disbelief. Payne dangerously drove through a live accident scene, putting officers and others at risk. I hope he truly reflects on his actions.”
