Drug Driver Jailed After Dangerous Police Chase Causing Extensive Damage

Jason Maddocks, 36, from Portmead Place in Blaenymaes, Swansea, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison following a high-speed police chase through north Wiltshire that resulted in significant damage to multiple vehicles. At Swansea Crown Court on November 14, Maddocks also received a driving ban lasting three years and seven months after pleading guilty to failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving over the prescribed drug limit, possession of class A drugs, and criminal damage.

The incident unfolded on October 1, 2024, when Wiltshire Police attempted to stop Maddocks’ vehicle in the Corsham area after receiving information suggesting a vulnerable missing person was inside. Despite the police approach, Maddocks refused to stop, initiating a pursuit that spanned several villages including Yatton Keynell, Castle Combe, and Acton Turville, before rejoining the M4 towards Chippenham.

During the chase, Maddocks drove recklessly—reaching speeds up to 100mph on the hard shoulder and at times driving towards oncoming traffic—putting the lives of local residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders in serious danger. The car chase ended when the vehicle was stopped at Hullavington Airfield, where police found cocaine inside. Fortunately, the vulnerable missing person was safely recovered.

Police Constable Nick Slade commented, “This was a dangerous pursuit through rural villages with potential hazards such as children and cyclists. Maddocks showed complete disregard for public safety in his attempts to evade capture. His sentence reflects the seriousness of his actions and ensures he can no longer pose a threat on the roads.”
