Motorists should prepare for significant overnight closures on the M5 as major resurfacing work continues across Somerset and Devon.
Tonight, the southbound carriageway of the M5 between junction 23 (A39 Bridgwater North) and junction 24 (A38 Taunton Road, Bridgwater South) will be fully closed from 10pm until 6am tomorrow morning, July 20. This closure affects all three southbound lanes, including the exit slip road at junction 24.
Meanwhile, the northbound M5 section in Devon will also face overnight closures between junction 27 (A361 Tiverton) and junction 25 (A358 Taunton) from 9pm tonight until 6am tomorrow.

This work is part of a multi-phase resurfacing project. The initial phase covering Somerset took place from June 14 to July 14. The current second phase runs from July 19 to July 30 and focuses on the southbound lanes between junctions 23 and 24. The third phase, scheduled from August 2 to August 6, will close the northbound lanes between the same junctions for further repairs.
National Highways has assured drivers that clearly signed diversion routes will be in place throughout all closures. However, they advise motorists to remain alert as schedules may change at short notice.
Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during these essential works to maintain and improve motorway safety and quality.
