Driver found ‘not at fault’ in tragic death of teen fleeing police on M5, family states

The tragic death of 17-year-old Tamzin Ellen Hall, who was fatally struck by a car while fleeing a police vehicle on the M5 motorway in November 2024, will be examined by a jury in an upcoming inquest, a coroner has confirmed.

Tamzin, from Wellington, Somerset, suffered fatal head, neck, and chest injuries when she was hit by a southbound vehicle on the M5 between junctions 25 (Taunton) and 24 (Bridgwater) shortly after 11 p.m. on November 11, 2024. At the time, she was under arrest and traveling in an Avon and Somerset Police car that had stopped on the motorway.

During a pre-inquest review held at Taunton Coroner’s Court, Senior Coroner Samantha Marsh set a provisional date for the inquest to begin on January 11, 2027, at Wells Town Hall. The hearing is expected to last two to three weeks.

Family members, police representatives, and the driver of the vehicle involved attended the hearing. A representative for the Hall family emphasized that the driver who struck Tamzin was “not at fault at all” for the incident.

Earlier in the inquest proceedings, it was revealed that Tamzin exited the police car, crossed the motorway, and climbed over a crash barrier before the collision occurred. The vehicle that struck her was driven by a member of the public traveling on the southbound carriageway.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is actively investigating the case, focusing on the interactions between Tamzin and two Avon and Somerset Police officers preceding her death. A report from the IOPC detailed how Tamzin was able to remove her handcuffs and move from the rear passenger seat to the front passenger seat of the police vehicle prior to the incident.
