Driver Arrested Following Serious M5 Crash Injuring Elderly Woman

A driver has been arrested after a serious crash on the M5 left an elderly woman critically injured. The collision occurred shortly before 11:30 pm on Saturday, October 4, at the Clevedon junction (Junction 20) and involved a white Renault Master flatbed van and a white Hyundai i10.

The driver of the Hyundai, a woman in her 80s, received first aid at the scene before being transported to hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

Following the crash, the van was found abandoned nearby. Police launched an investigation to identify those involved, leading to the arrest of a man in his 20s from the West Midlands area on Monday, October 6. He was taken into custody on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving but has since been released on police bail.

Avon and Somerset Police continue to investigate, reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness statements to build a clearer picture of the incident.

A police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward after a woman was seriously injured in a collision on the M5 at Clevedon. If you have any information that could assist our ongoing investigation, please contact us quoting reference number 5225278941.”
