Sussex and Somerset were content to settle for a draw in their County Championship clash at Hove after the entire third day was abandoned due to rain.
For Somerset, the stalemate helped to solidify their standing among the Division One leaders, while Sussex secured valuable points that keep them in contention at the lower end of the table.
Somerset set Sussex a challenging target of 303 runs from 44 overs, but showed no inclination to aggressively push for a victory. Sussex, for their part, chose to play conservatively, focusing on batting out the final session. The prospect of a decisive result faded when rain cut short proceedings with Sussex at 62 for 1 after 14 overs. Dan Hughes was the sole wicket to fall, caught behind off the unpredictable bounce generated by Migael Pretorius, with Tom Abell taking a sharp tumbling catch at second slip.

Jason Kerr, Somerset’s head coach, reflected on the match: “A draw was always on the cards after losing the whole of day three, particularly given the nature of the pitch. Losing that time yesterday was incredibly frustrating. There was a real opportunity to seize the initiative, but unfortunately, the weather denied us that chance. We had many discussions on the morning of day four, weighing our options. Ultimately, setting a target of 300 in 44 overs meant the onus was on us to win. We probably should have added more runs in our first innings. Tom Abell was outstanding once again. I thought our bowling on day two was exceptional, and it brought us right back into the contest. Despite the weather, there are positives to take from the game.”
Somerset began the final day on 167 for 2, leading by 119 runs, and by lunch, the likelihood of a result other than a draw seemed slim.
In the productive opening session, Somerset added 83 runs for the loss of just one wicket. The dismissal came at 198 when Henry Crocombe, bowling from the sea end, trapped Tom Lammonby lbw with a first-ball in-ducker. Lammonby had been impressive, scoring 93 from 171 balls with 12 fours, marking his highest score of the season.
Further breakthroughs followed as Sean Hunt removed Tom Abell for 37 at 266; Abell had been dropped earlier off the same bowler. Henry Nicholls, having reached a well-compiled half-century, fell at 283, caught at deep midwicket by James Coles off all-rounder Joey Evison, who recently joined Sussex on loan from Kent with a permanent move arranged for next year.
Evison quickly struck again: after Craig Overton pulled him for six, Overton’s next shot was caught at deep square-leg by Jack Carson. James Rew also fell while attempting to push for pre-declaration runs, caught at deep point after scoring 27 from 44 balls.
Pretorius was the eighth wicket to fall at 343, caught by wicketkeeper John Simpson in a fine diving effort towards square-leg. Somerset declared their innings on 350 for 9 after Jack Leach was well held by Sean Hunt off Jack Carson.
Before play commenced, Somerset made a last-minute change as Jake Ball replaced Josh Shaw, who had to leave after his partner gave birth to a baby boy over the weekend.
The match illustrated the challenges teams face when weather intervenes, with both sides taking a pragmatic approach to salvage points in a closely contested Division One encounter.
