Downside School’s Headteacher to Retire After ‘Outstanding’ Service

After seven years of dedicated leadership, Somerset’s Downside School will bid farewell to its headteacher, Andrew Hobbs. The retirement comes as the school celebrates Mr. Hobbs for his “outstanding” service and commitment to academic excellence and pastoral care. During his tenure, significant developments have been made across all areas of school life, and his deep understanding of the school’s values will leave a lasting legacy.

The school has announced the appointment of the current deputy head, Michael Randall, as the interim head from September 2025. The decision aims to facilitate a full search and selection process for a permanent appointment. Mr. Randall, who has worked closely with Mr. Hobbs for the past seven years, has been instrumental in driving academic success and ensuring the school’s commitment to helping every pupil fulfill their potential.

Reflecting on his time at the school, Mr. Hobbs expressed his hope of contributing to strengthening Downside’s identity as a center of Catholic and Benedictine faith and education. He also conveyed his confidence in Mr. Randall’s ability to lead and develop the school, supported by an outstanding team of colleagues.
