Double Rapist Sentenced to Over 16 Years After Victims’ Courage Brings Justice

A man from Trowbridge has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison following convictions for raping two women, a decade apart. Marcin Janikowski, 39, residing in Cusance Way, Hilperton, was handed the sentence at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday, September 19.

Janikowski initially pleaded guilty to the rape of a woman in 2023 but later attempted to change his plea. He denied raping another woman in 2014, yet was found guilty by a jury in July 2024. The court sentenced him to 16 and a half years imprisonment, with 13 years and six months to be served in custody and the remainder on licence. Additionally, he received a restraining order.

Detective Constable James Gatherum of Wiltshire Police’s Criminal Investigation Department detailed that Janikowski violently raped his first victim—known to him—in 2014. Although the initial investigation lacked sufficient evidence, the case remained open pending new developments. This new evidence emerged in early 2024 when a second victim came forward, culminating in a fresh investigation leading to Janikowski’s arrest.

One survivor shared a heartfelt statement in court: “I thought he was that missing piece that made my life complete. He stole my hopes, my dreams, my future, and every day was filled with fear and sadness. No amount of justice will ever undo the damage he caused to me, my family, and so many others.”

DC Gatherum praised the victims’ extraordinary strength and tenacity in coming forward: “Their bravery has been pivotal in achieving today’s outcome. Janikowski’s actions inflicted deep trauma, and this sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the threat he poses to women.”

He further highlighted the complexities many abuse victims face, noting how factors such as housing, finances, language barriers, and children can hinder them from seeking help. “Support is available, and today’s verdict demonstrates that justice is possible,” said DC Gatherum.

Wiltshire Police also emphasized the confidential support offered to victims of sexual assault by specialist independent advisors. These Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs) provide practical and emotional support, allowing victims to seek help without necessarily involving law enforcement unless serious danger is present.
