Dorset Council has extended the consultation periods for two significant planning documents following an overwhelming number of responses and widespread reports of technical difficulties on its online platform. The Local Transport Plan consultation will now remain open until Monday, October 20, and the Local Plan consultation has been extended until Friday, October 31.
Residents expressed frustration as slow-loading online surveys hindered their participation, prompting many to call for more time to submit feedback. In response, the council issued an apology and committed to ensuring all voices are heard in the decision-making process.
Jan Britton, Dorset Council’s Executive Director for Planning and Transport, emphasized the community’s strong engagement: “The high level of interest demonstrates how deeply people care about Dorset’s future. We regret the technical issues some have experienced and want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to have their say.”

To accommodate residents, the consultations will remain accessible online and via email for the extended periods. The council also highlights the availability of alternative formats, including Easy Read versions, to enhance accessibility. Residents can submit responses by emailing [email protected] for the Local Plan and [email protected] for the Local Transport Plan.
Dorset Council advises participants not to wait until the final days to respond, as high demand could again affect online access. Alternative formats and Easy Read versions of both plans are available on the council’s website at www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/dorset-is-changing.
