In a bold attempt to test the boundaries of human endurance and raise crucial funds for charity, Dr. Adam Baker and Dr. Charlie Fleury are gearing up for the daunting Archipelago Yachts Polar Swim challenge.
The husband and wife team have previously accomplished a grueling 3,000-mile row across the Atlantic and a 1683-mile partial circumnavigation row around Great Britain.
This year’s challenge involves swimming a kilometer in the icy waters of both the Arctic Circle and Antarctica, clad in nothing more than a conventional swimsuit and cap, with water temperatures expected to fluctuate between -1°C and 4°C.

Only 12 individuals have achieved this feat so far, as the challenges of cold-water shock, hypothermia, and the constant threat of orcas, leopard seals, and polar bears loom large.
Already acclimatized to stress and sleep deprivation, they are driven to push themselves even further both physically and mentally, striving to conquer seemingly impossible feats.
Dr. Adam Baker, a Palliative Care Doctor at Weston Hospicecare, explained, “I’m dedicated to helping people overcome enormous challenges, and I am extremely proud to be part of the team at Weston Hospicecare, providing exceptional support to individuals with life-limiting conditions and their families across North Somerset and Somerset. This is why we have selected them as one of the beneficiary charities. We are also passionate about ocean conservation, hence our efforts to raise funds for the Ocean Conservation Trust, with a target of £20,000.”
Scheduled to commence in September with the first swim in the Arctic Circle off Svalbard, Norway, the challenge will culminate with the second swim in Antarctica in November. The pair will confront the elements, swimming in some of the most unforgiving environments on the planet.
Charlie emphasized, “Attaining our fundraising goal for our incredible charities would be remarkable. We would be grateful if people extend their support by donating through our website.”
