In my inaugural exploration of Taunton, I was captivated by the striking gothic red brick spire of Taunton Minster and the charming Independent Quarter. The Norman castle that houses the Museum of Somerset, along with the verdant Castle Green, added to the town’s allure, resembling an Oxbridge college campus from a certain angle.
What struck me was the absence of a clear reputation for Taunton, unlike other neighboring towns like Bath, Frome, Bridgwater, or Glastonbury. Despite the general liking for Taunton, people struggled to define exactly why they enjoyed it.
Speaking to locals reinforced this observation. Susie, a native artist, shared her vision for Taunton to establish a distinct brand, suggesting elements like cricket, cider, and historical richness, as well as a thriving arts scene, could contribute to this. She drew a parallel with Frome’s transformation into an independent hotspot and believed Taunton could undergo a similar revitalization.

Lionel praised the town’s independent hubs, noting the appeal of places like Bath Place. As I reluctantly left Taunton, its potential identity became clear - an indie shopping paradise in the making, ready to rival Frome.
