My first encounter with Taunton on a grey winter’s day whisked me away to a realm of captivating sights. The awe-inspiring 158-foot gothic red brick spire of Taunton Minster drew me in, followed by the delightful Independent Quarter.
My meandering path led me to the Norman castle housing the Museum of Somerset and the lush surroundings of Castle Green, reminiscent of a prestigious Oxbridge college campus.
Flying proudly above the gatehouse, the Somerset flag with its red dragon stood as a symbol of pride. An adjacent sight was Bath Place, a charming range of independent shops adorned with vibrant bunting.

In my career as a journalist, each town I’ve explored is often enveloped in a distinct reputation. Bath is esteemed as posh, Frome as upscale, Bridgwater as troubled, and Glastonbury as a bohemian haven.
Surprisingly, Taunton seemed to lack a defined image. People expressed their fondness for Taunton but struggled to articulate why.
Susie, a local artist and Taunton native, echoed this sentiment. Despite venturing elsewhere in her youth, she found herself drawn back to her hometown.
When probed about Taunton’s character, she remarked, “I think it still needs to find that, to be honest. I don’t think it has a brand yet, and I think that’s something that really needs to be pushed for the town.”
Susie proposed that elements such as cricket, cider, and historical richness could contribute to Taunton’s brand. Additionally, she envisioned a thriving arts scene akin to Frome’s, attracting enthusiasts from all around.
Noting Frome’s transformation into an independent hotspot in a relatively short span, Susie pondered why a similar revival couldn’t transpire in Taunton.
Lionel praised independent havens such as Bath Place, stating, “The really nice thing about Bath Place is all the shops are independent and people do seek us out. Generally, the town has definitely become quieter - like most places - for shopping.”
As I bid a reluctant adieu to Taunton, its potential identity began to crystallize in my mind. The bustling weekend markets against the backdrop of ancient castles, the adorned Bath Place, and the thriving Independent Quarter all pointed in one direction.
Taunton was on the verge of metamorphosing into an indie shopping paradise. Frome, take note. You have a newfound contender for your crown.
