Keeping children entertained during the summer break can often be challenging and expensive, especially when trips to traditional seaside destinations involve steep travel costs and entry fees. As a lifelong Londoner, my go-to beach trips were usually Brighton, Bournemouth, or Kent. However, rising expenses, like the unexpected entry charge for Brighton Pier, have made these outings less appealing.
But what if I told you there’s a sandy, family-friendly beach experience right in Croydon — completely free?
Enter Costa del Croydon: a remarkable man-made beach perched on the rooftop of a vacant car park in the heart of South London. Complete with soft sand, water features, and even palm trees, it may sound unusual, but the reality is breathtaking. This pop-up beach has become a community haven, offering a joyous escape without the price tag.

Since its launch last year attracted over 30,000 visitors, Costa del Croydon is back and bigger than ever, featuring new activities, more food options, and an expanded schedule. Best of all, entrance remains free throughout August via online booking.
A spokesperson explained, “Costa del Croydon is designed to bring joy to local residents who might not have easy access to traditional beaches. Many families here live in flats without outdoor space, so this event offers a much-needed seaside escape right in their town, at no cost.”
Community Days, held every Tuesday with support from Croydon Voluntary Action, allow local groups to showcase their talents and performances, ensuring an engaging and diverse program for everyone.
Upon arrival, the vibrant atmosphere immediately struck me: the laughter of children, Caribbean music playing, and the sight of a perfectly maintained sandpit bordered by palm trees. Despite the high volume of visitors, the sand remained spotless, proving impressive upkeep by organizers.
Alongside the sand area, there is a giant chess set, a giant Connect Four game, go-karting, water “fire blast” games, and trampolines to entertain all ages. For those worried about sand, refreshing water fountains offer a fun way to wash off or cool down.
The extensive lineup of food trucks caters to various tastes, featuring hearty dishes like toasties, jacket potatoes, hot dogs, burgers, and chicken wings. I enjoyed a deliciously filling chilli con carne jacket potato for just £6, ample enough to share. Ice cream treats and slushies were also popular options, all from independent UK vendors.
One charming vendor, who owns the seaside-style Candy Cart doughnut stall, has even traveled from Scotland to participate, adding to the event’s community spirit.
Classic seaside fun remains with a hook-a-duck stall offering prizes, though some might find the £5-per-play price a bit steep.
Comfort is key at Costa del Croydon, with oversized hammocks and rentable huts scattered in the chill-out zone for those seeking relaxation. Interestingly, the beach also attracts local office workers on lunch breaks, making it a popular escape for all ages.
As the sun began to set, the atmosphere shifted magically — the high-rise buildings faded from view, and the artificial palms seemed to transform into real ones. For a moment, it truly felt like a genuine beach getaway.
Parents I spoke to shared positive feedback: one mom wished for more activities for toddlers but praised the overall experience and reasonable food prices. Another visitor appreciated the fun but noted the need for advance booking and the challenge of unpredictable weather.
Costa del Croydon runs through August 31, so if you’re seeking a unique, affordable, and fun beach day in London, this rooftop paradise is well worth a visit.
