Difficult but Inevitable: Taunton’s Ninkasi Bar Closes After Months of Struggle

Ninkasi, a cherished bar nestled in the heart of Taunton’s Independent Quarter, has permanently closed following a “difficult but inevitable” decision by its owners. Located at 1 Riverside Place, Ninkasi had gained a devoted following for its distinctive focus on craft beers and West Country gins—its very name inspired by the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of beer.

In a heartfelt farewell statement, the proprietors revealed the harsh realities that led to the closure. They cited escalating operational costs and a sharp decline in foot traffic as key challenges that rendered the business unsustainable. After many months of tenaciously trying to keep Ninkasi afloat—including the recruitment of a dedicated bartender named Courtney and subsidizing the bar while returning to work in construction—the owners concluded that continuing was no longer viable.

“The current economic climate has left many potential customers without disposable income, particularly for non-essential spends like craft drinks,” the statement explained. “This downturn in customer numbers has sadly contributed to the demise of our beloved venue.”

The closure of Ninkasi echoes a nationwide trend, with England and Wales reportedly losing around six pubs each week. The owners lament this loss of cultural and social heritage, warning that without government action—such as reducing VAT or business rates on hospitality—the decline will persist. They argue that this shortsighted approach not only jeopardizes pubs and bars but also diminishes tourism and other revenue streams vital to the economy.

With no meaningful support on the horizon, the future looks bleak for many venues like Ninkasi. The owners expressed deep gratitude to their staff, loyal patrons, and exceptional suppliers who brought innovative craft beer and spirits to Taunton, making the bar a safe, welcoming, and unique destination. Though closing the doors is a painful reality, Ninkasi’s legacy as a pioneer in the local hospitality scene will not be forgotten.
