Thieves have struck Ferne Animal Sanctuary in Somerset, stealing vital equipment and vehicles that are essential to the care of over 300 animals housed at the centre. The charity, located in the countryside near Chard, looks after a wide range of animals including cats, dogs, horses, ponies, and guinea pigs.
The burglary, which took place overnight on Saturday, 25 July, saw the theft of a crucial pick-up truck used for transporting animals, a quad bike essential for accessing various parts of the sanctuary, a trailer, and numerous tools necessary for daily animal care.
Volunteers are now forced to complete all care tasks manually, a process that is both time-consuming and more physically demanding. The sanctuary has expressed the emotional toll the incident has taken on the team, highlighting how the loss of these items has severely impacted their operations.

“The quad bike is indispensable for many tasks such as moving feed around the site, cleaning fields, and retrieving sick animals from distant areas,” the sanctuary explained. “The pick-up and tools are vital for site maintenance and ensuring the safety of our animals and visitors.”
Although the sanctuary is insured, there is concern that insurance payouts may not fully cover the cost of replacements. They have described the stolen items as “priceless” due to their integral role in the sanctuary’s daily work.
Ferne Animal Sanctuary was established over 80 years ago by the late Nina, Duchess of Hamilton & Brandon, at the start of World War Two. Its original mission was to provide refuge for pets whose owners were serving overseas. Many owners never returned, leading the sanctuary to become a lasting haven for animals.
The local community and supporters across the county have rallied around the charity, sending an outpouring of messages denouncing the theft and offering support through social media and direct contact.
“Lowest of the low targeting a charity,” wrote one supporter on Facebook, echoing widespread sentiment condemning the crime.
Many have described the burglary as “sickening” and expressed sorrow at the actions of those responsible.
To assist with recovery efforts, the sanctuary has established a JustGiving page to help fund the replacement of the stolen equipment. Donations have been pouring in, demonstrating strong community solidarity.
One donor commented, “Keep up the good work. There are nasty people about unfortunately, but your commitment makes all the difference.”
