Devastating Loss: Somerset Man’s Battle with Pancreatic Cancer

Jane Clapinson from Minehead, Somerset, tragically lost her husband Colin to pancreatic cancer in 2022, only nine months after his diagnosis. His story is being shared in November, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, to bring attention to the urgent need for early detection and prevention. Pancreatic cancer is known for its vague symptoms, contributing to late diagnoses and low survival rates. Colin’s battle and his wife’s plea for awareness serve as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of this disease.

Colin, a retired probation officer, first experienced symptoms in 2020, but despite various tests, a diagnosis was only confirmed a year later through a CT scan. The disease had reached an advanced stage, having spread to his lymph nodes and lung. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, Colin’s health rapidly deteriorated, and he sadly passed away in September 2022.

Jane emphasizes the importance of recognizing the common symptoms - back pain, indigestion, tummy pain, and weight loss - urging individuals to seek medical attention if these persist for more than four weeks. Awareness and early detection are crucial in increasing survival rates for this aggressive cancer.
