Determined Somerset Woman Leads Charity Pilgrimage After Spinal Injury

Annie Maw, a resident of Pilton, Somerset, is preparing to lead a remarkable pilgrimage across the county—from Bath Abbey to Wells Cathedral—covering 30 miles in her wheelchair. Despite breaking her spine in a near-fatal accident, Annie’s determination remains unshaken as she leads 50 walkers raising funds for vulnerable elderly populations both locally and in war-torn eastern Ukraine.

Last year, Annie inspired many by ascending Glastonbury Tor in her wheelchair, carried by a team of firefighters, demonstrating her unwavering spirit. This year, the challenge was publicly announced at the City of Wells Almshouses, coinciding with the rededication of their 15th-century chapel, recently restored through significant renovation efforts.

Bishop Michael of Bath and Wells, present at the event, commended the historical generosity of affluent benefactors who established almshouses for the poor, likening them to modern-day philanthropic figures such as Elon Musk.

Annie reflects on the legacy of Bishop Nicholas Bubwith, who 600 years ago funded the Wells Almshouses out of care for vulnerable elderly individuals. She and her team are continuing this mission by supporting elderly people in Wells and extending help to those suffering in Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict.

She encourages community involvement: “Please join us on our walk or sponsor us as we carry out this vital work on your behalf. Visit gofund.me/5b3076a3 to learn more or make a donation.”

Michelle Thomas, chief executive of the Wells Almshouses, expressed deep gratitude to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other donors for making the chapel’s restoration possible. She emphasized the chapel’s future role as a communal asset and highlighted the partnership with Annie Maw for the fundraising campaign.

Each walker is tasked with raising £1,000 in sponsorship, with proceeds divided to support both Ukrainian charities (75%) and the Wells Almshouses (25%). Festival Medical Services, based in Somerton, which provides volunteer medical support at Glastonbury Festival and has delivered multiple ambulances of supplies to Ukraine this year, is backing the fundraising efforts. Annie serves as their patron.

Those interested in joining the walk can apply by contacting Stephanie Sutcliffe at Festival Medical Services via email at [email protected].
