A youthful Bath Rugby side earned a crucial try-bonus point despite a 50-28 loss to Sale Sharks on Sunday, as the home team dominated the second half at the CorpAcq Stadium.
Bath conceded an early try to Sale’s Tom Roebuck but responded with two quick tries by Kepu Tuipulotu and Charlie Griffin to take the lead against a Sale team loaded with internationals.
However, Sale struck twice late in the first half through Joe Carpenter to lead 17-14 at the break.

The second half saw Sale extend their dominance, scoring five more tries, including Carpenter completing a hat-trick, with Tye Raymont, Xavier Roe, Nathan Jibulu and Alfie Longstaff adding to the tally to make it 50-14 with ten minutes remaining.
Nevertheless, Bath showed great spirit by scoring two late tries from Jasper Spandler and Tom Carr-Smith to secure a bonus point.
Rugby writer Sam Jess offers a closer analysis of each Bath player’s performance:
15 Jack Woods – 6: Returning from a hamstring injury, Woods showed glimpses of promise, with some bright moments in attack, but struggled defensively and was twice beaten by Carpenter.
14 Tyler Offiah – 6: In his first appearance since last November, Offiah demonstrated strong work rate and pace, forcing turnovers, though a defensive lapse allowed Sale’s fourth try.
13 Charlie Griffin – 5: Filling in at centre, Griffin appeared uneasy with ball in hand but made a crucial defensive read and scored a well-worked try.
12 Declan Treacey – 5: Making his Bath debut, Treacey delivered solid defensive efforts but handling errors restricted Bath’s attacking rhythm.
11 Sam Winters – 4: Winters had a quiet match and missed key opportunities near the Sharks’ line, occasionally looking out of place.
10 Ciaran Donoghue – 5: After a disrupted previous season, Donoghue showed flashes of creativity but was affected by inconsistent passing and challenging Sale’s pressure defence.
9 Ieuan Davies – 5: Back in Bath colours, Davies displayed promise but was undone early by a Sale grubber kick leading to the first try and struggled to find flow.
1 Scott Kirk – 7: Kirk held firm in the scrums and produced a standout moment intercepting a pass to run strongly, demonstrating notable pace for a prop.
2 Kepueli Tuipulotu – 7: Bright defensively and effective in lineouts and mauls, the hooker scored a try and was influential at the breakdown, securing multiple turnovers.
3 Kieran Verden – 6: Started strongly in scrums but conceded a soft penalty; overall put in a solid 65-minute effort.
4 Will Jeanes – 5: Competent in tight phases but struggled to make an impact in lineout play.
5 Ewan Richards – 6: As captain, Richards led by example with physicality and crucial turnovers, although an injury hampered his later involvement.
6 Jack Bennett – 7: Up against England star Courtney Lawes, Bennett was a standout with high work rate and key turnovers, maintaining intensity throughout.
7 George Timmins – 6: Known for his big hits, Timmins made several strong tackles but sometimes allowed opponents to evade him.
8 Enoch Opoku-Gyamfi – 7: Delivered a commanding performance at number eight, providing momentum with carries and dominant defence, including big hits on Lawes; unfortunately left the field injured before halftime.
Replacements:
16 Jasper Spandler – 6: Made an impact with accurate lineout throws and scored a try controlling the maul.
17 Ioan Emmanuel, 18 Alfie Griffin, 22 James Linegar, 23 Jack Harrison – N/A
19 James Maloney – N/A: Came on and made a useful turnover.
20 Alex Ridgway – 6: Struggled with tackling at times, including missing a key stop allowing a Sale try.
21 Tom Carr-Smith – 6: Came on late and scored a vital bonus-point try with a neat break.
Bath Rugby will look to build on the positives as they prepare for their next fixture, despite the heavy loss to a strong Sale Sharks side in this season’s opener.
