With dental care becoming increasingly inaccessible for many, people are turning to crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe to cover the high costs of private treatment. A recent investigation by The Mirror, part of its Dentists for All campaign, reveals a sharp rise in crowdfunding appeals from those unable to access essential dentistry through the NHS.
The use of GoFundMe for dental fundraising more than doubled in recent years, highlighting a growing crisis. Dentists warn that the situation is pushing UK dentistry “back to the Victorian era,” with patients facing unbearable pain and limited options. Some have resorted to drastic measures, such as extracting their own teeth or traveling abroad for costly treatment.
Among those seeking help is Bluebelle, a Somerset-based singer whose ongoing dental issues have severely affected her ability to eat, speak, and perform. Unable to secure timely NHS care for the extensive surgery she needs—including surgical extractions, bone grafting, reconstruction, and implants—her spouse Alex launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise £4,500 toward her £12,000 treatment cost. So far, the fundraiser has raised just £453.

Alex shares that for Bluebelle, her voice is more than just an instrument—it’s her identity and livelihood. The campaign underscores the profound impact of dental health on dignity, mental well-being, and quality of life. “No one should have to live like this,” Alex says.
Funds raised will cover a full dental assessment, scans, surgeries, post-operative care, and pain management. Transparency is a priority, with updates including consultation notes, treatment plans, X-rays, and detailed cost breakdowns shared publicly.
