Dementia-Friendly Pledge Poised to Transform Peasedown into a Model Community

Peasedown is on track to become Bath and North East Somerset’s first dementia-friendly community, thanks to an inspiring campaign led by the Peasedown Community Trust. This September, during World Alzheimer’s Month, local businesses, charities, and community groups are being called upon to join the movement and support people living with dementia.

Since its inception in 2019, Dementia Friendly Peasedown has gained significant momentum. Over 300 residents have participated in dementia awareness workshops, equipping themselves with vital knowledge and skills to support affected individuals. Independent councillors Karen Walker and Gavin Heathcote are championing the cause, urging even more organisations to take meaningful action.

Councillor Walker emphasizes, “As dementia rates increase, it’s essential that local groups ensure their venues—whether shops, community centres, or places of worship—are welcoming and accessible for those living with dementia. Training staff and volunteers to offer compassionate support is crucial.”

Participating organisations will pledge to implement practical measures to make their environments more dementia-friendly. These include improving signage and lighting, offering staff training, and fostering a supportive attitude throughout the community.

In recognition of their commitment, groups will receive a Dementia Friendly Peasedown badge to display both on their premises and online, signaling their dedication to inclusivity.

Councillor Heathcote highlights the broader impact: “Currently, there are no dementia-friendly communities in Bath and North East Somerset. Peasedown’s efforts could set a powerful example, positioning our village as a pioneer and demonstrating genuine community spirit.”

Dementia charities underscore the importance of these initiatives, noting the rising prevalence of dementia and the positive impact of supportive environments on quality of life.
