Deliberate Fire Sends Smoke Plumes Billowing Over M5 Near Somerset

A fire that sent thick plumes of black smoke rising over the M5 near Somerset is believed to have been deliberately set. The blaze occurred on Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth, Bristol, creating dangerous driving conditions for motorists.

Reported at 3:39 pm on Friday, May 30, the fire involved a large pile of rubbish burning intensely. The smoke was visible for miles, prompting National Highways to deploy slow signs along the M5 as a safety precaution for drivers traveling from Somerset.

Avon Fire and Rescue quickly dispatched crews from Avonmouth, Southmead, Temple, and Kingswood fire stations to combat the flames. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, utilized water jets and hoses to extinguish the fire effectively.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue confirmed the blaze is believed to have been started intentionally, describing it as a rubbish fire that was successfully brought under control.
