Delays in Completion of Yeovil Town Centre Amphitheatre Confirmed by Council

The Somerset Council has officially announced that the construction of the new amphitheatre in Yeovil town centre will not be finished until autumn, marking yet another delay in the £24m Yeovil Refresh regeneration program. Despite initial hopes for completion by the end of summer, the council has confirmed the extended timeline for this crucial public realm improvement project.

The amphitheatre, situated at The Triangle and set to replace the town’s former bandstand, is a significant element of the regeneration program. Intended to feature water elements and facilitate open-air events, the venue will also incorporate a giant LED screen for broadcasting major events. However, construction has caused major disruption to nearby shops and walkways, creating inconvenience for visitors to the town centre.

In a report presented before the council’s executive meeting in Taunton, Nicola Hix, the council’s director of finance and procurement, detailed the status of the project. She noted the completion of work on the western end of Middle Street and highlighted the delays due to obstacles in Middle Street caused by a dangerous structure at 47 Middle Street.

The Yeovil Refresh program, backed by a £9.75m grant from the government’s future high streets fund, will also utilize additional funding to enhance the town’s cycle network. The program includes plans for shared cycling and walking facilities, upgraded crossings, and drainage improvements, with preliminary work already underway.

Despite setbacks, the council remains committed to the revitalization of Yeovil town centre, allocating funds to various development sites and cycling infrastructure improvements.
