DEFRA Chair Visits Somerset Farm to Address Agricultural Challenges and Innovations

Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee Chair Alistair Carmichael MP recently visited Landmark Farm in Wanstrow, Somerset, to engage directly with local farmers about the challenges and opportunities in sustainable agriculture. Joined by Anna Sabine, MP for Frome and East Somerset, Carmichael aimed to gain firsthand insight into how rural communities are adapting to evolving environmental and economic demands.

During the visit, Carmichael toured the farm’s milking parlour, calf sheds, and renewable energy installations, including a wind turbine powering the site. The Mounty family, owners of Landmark Farm, produce beef, milk, and arable crops, and have embraced green energy and carbon capture efforts to reduce their environmental impact.

Anna Sabine highlighted the tour as a chance to showcase the region’s agricultural innovation. “It was a privilege to demonstrate to Alistair the progressive farming happening here in Somerset and to hear directly from Craig and his father about the significant challenges they face,” she said.

Craig Mounty, who previously engaged with Anna through National Farmers’ Union meetings, shared insights into the everyday realities of food production and the increasing complexities of new government regulations. Both MPs acknowledged the crucial role of the West Country’s fertile lands in bolstering the UK’s food security.

Anna Sabine emphasized, “Somerset’s farmers are invaluable to both the local and national economies. By working collaboratively with them, we can develop solutions that balance economic viability and environmental responsibility, ensuring sustainable growth for the future.”
