Defiant Bridgwater Residents Unite Against Racism

This past weekend, Bridgwater residents decisively voiced their stance against racism, emphasizing that such behavior will not be tolerated in their community.

On Saturday, January 10, people of all ages convened at Cornhill holding signs proudly stating, “Bridgwater: Proud to say no to racism.”

Among the crowd was local farmer Simon Darch, a lifelong Bridgwater resident who strongly condemned racist attitudes and xenophobia. Simon highlighted the invaluable contributions of overseas workers who have supported his farm and cared for his family, especially his mother in her final years.

He passionately remarked, “For every one person who abuses the system, there are dozens who dedicate themselves to sustaining the country—in healthcare, education, transportation, farming, and many other sectors.”

Simon has actively shared the group’s anti-racism message with Bridgwater Town Council, local colleges, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Trades Union Council, receiving encouraging support.

Looking ahead, Simon announced that future gatherings will continue to be held in Cornhill, inviting anyone committed to opposing racism to join—whether to show solidarity briefly or stand for the full hour.
