Decision on 1,700-Home Frome Development Expected by Easter

The long-anticipated fate of the Selwood Garden Community, a proposed development of 1,700 new homes in Frome, is set to be decided around Easter. The Planning Inspectorate has confirmed that the final verdict will be announced by early April 2026.

This ambitious development project aims to transform agricultural land between B3090 Marston Lane and the busy A361 into a vibrant community. Beyond housing, the plans feature commercial spaces, two care homes, a local centre with shops and a potential medical centre, a primary school, as well as public open spaces and sports facilities.

A public inquiry took place in Shepton Mallet in August 2025, led by Planning Inspector Stephen Normington. Over several days, the inquiry gathered evidence from local residents, professional experts, and included an official site visit.

Following the inquiry, Mr. Normington has submitted his report to Housing Secretary Steve Reed MP. A spokesperson for the Planning Inspectorate stated, “The inspector’s report has been sent to the secretary of state for consideration, and a decision will be issued on or before April 8, 2026.”

During the inquiry, Paul Tucker KC, representing the Selwood Garden Community consortium of landowners, highlighted the project’s benefits. He emphasized its potential to provide much-needed affordable housing, create employment opportunities, offer extensive green spaces, and improve the A36 highway linking Frome to Bath. Tucker argued that Frome is the ideal location for growth in the district, citing its superior sustainability and a lack of viable alternative development sites.

Somerset Council maintained a neutral position during the inquiry as the government had taken direct control of the decision through a “call-in” procedure. Their barrister, Killian Garvey, clarified that this neutrality reflected the council’s limited role and did not imply support or opposition.

As the community awaits the final decision, this development promises significant changes for Frome, potentially addressing pressing housing shortages and supporting local infrastructure growth.
