The former Debenhams department store in Taunton, located at 19-26 North Street, is officially up for sale after remaining vacant since its closure in May 2021. The site has stood empty for several years, prompting efforts to find a new purpose for this prominent town centre building.
Following collaborative talks with local stakeholders facilitated by Taunton MP Gideon Amos, the decision was made by the building’s owner, Ropemaker Properties, to place the property on the market. Their aim is to encourage a swift redevelopment that will breathe new life into the space.
A representative from Ropemaker Properties commented, “This site has been empty for too long, and we are eager to see it brought back into use promptly. After careful consideration, selling to a developer or operator with the right expertise is the fastest way to secure the site’s future.”

The property is now listed with a guide price of £1,750,000. A robust marketing campaign led by Alder King’s Taunton office will launch this month to attract potential buyers.
Andrew Maynard, Partner at Alder King, expressed optimism about the prospects, noting, “Despite challenges in the commercial property market, the building’s prime location in Taunton town centre and the town’s ambitious regeneration initiatives make it an attractive opportunity for investors.”
Liberal Democrat MP Gideon Amos praised the move to sell the building. He emphasized the importance of bringing the former Debenhams site back into active use as part of broader efforts to revitalize Taunton’s town centre. Amos highlighted ongoing local projects, including new developments at Coal Orchard, progress at Firepool, public facility upgrades, and enhanced community safety measures. “This sale creates a valuable chance for private or public sector investors—or partnerships—to revitalize this key site and support Taunton’s growth,” he said.
With this sale underway, the long-vacant Debenhams building may soon become a cornerstone of Taunton’s vibrant future.
