‘Dangerous’ Caravan Fire Outside Glastonbury Tesco Deemed Suspicious

A fire that destroyed two caravans, damaged a third, and left visible scorch marks on a Tesco supermarket near Glastonbury is being investigated as suspicious by the police.

The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service responded to the blaze near the Tesco store on Wirral Park Road shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday. Authorities suspect the fire was deliberate.

Tesco confirmed that the supermarket was closed temporarily Saturday evening but reopened as normal the following morning.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson stated, “We were called, along with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, shortly before 8:15 p.m. to an incident on Beckery New Road. The fire severely damaged two caravans and affected a nearby third. Heat damage was also reported on a wall of a neighboring business premises.”

Sergeant Simon Lancey of the Glastonbury neighbourhood policing team said, “We are treating this incident as suspicious pending the outcome of the ongoing fire investigation. Thankfully, no injuries occurred, but if this fire was started deliberately, it was an extremely dangerous act.”

He added, “Neighbourhood officers will increase patrols in the coming days to support those affected and assist in the investigation. We urge anyone who witnessed the fire or has CCTV, dashcam, or other footage to contact us online at 101, referencing case number 5226163150. A Tesco representative reiterated on Monday morning (June 15), “Our Glastonbury Superstore is open as usual following a brief closure on Saturday evening. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
