The Met Office has issued a serious “danger to life” warning as a heavy rainstorm is forecast to batter Somerset starting Monday evening, December 8. The alert will be in effect from 6pm Monday through 6pm Tuesday, highlighting the risk of intense rainfall that could deposit up to 100mm on exposed hills, particularly across Somerset and Devon.
Officials have cautioned that fast-flowing or deep floodwaters may pose a significant risk to life, with hazardous driving conditions and disruptions expected across transport networks. Properties and businesses may also face flooding, while strengthening southerly winds are likely to exacerbate the situation throughout the South West.
According to the Met Office, “Persistent and heavy rain showers will develop Monday night into Tuesday morning. Though Tuesday could see intermittent rain, occasional heavy bursts remain likely. Rainfall totals will vary, with many areas receiving 20-40mm, and Dartmoor and south Wales high ground expecting 60-80mm. Some elevated, vulnerable hills may see between 80-100mm.”

The already saturated ground intensifies the potential for localized flooding and transport interruptions. Alongside this, increasing southerly winds may amplify the impact of the heavy rainfall.
Currently, the warning is categorized with a medium impact level and a low likelihood of occurrence. The regional forecast from Monday to Wednesday predicts a brighter start on Monday with occasional gusty showers. However, Tuesday will bring a wet and windy spell with coastal gales likely, before showers return on Wednesday.
Somerset is expected to face the brunt of the overnight showers around 3am on Tuesday, December 9, resulting in challenging conditions for residents and travelers alike.
