Tony Bartlett, a 39-year-old father from Axminster, Devon, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years for the murder of his four-week-old son, Atticus Bartlett. The tragic incident occurred at their home in Chard, Somerset, on July 16, 2022, when Atticus collapsed and later died due to severe internal injuries caused by violent shaking.
Following a trial at Bristol Crown Court, the jury found Bartlett guilty of violently shaking Atticus, resulting in critical brain and spinal cord injuries. Presiding judge Mr Justice Cavanagh highlighted Bartlett’s heavy intoxication at the time of the attack, noting that the tragedy likely would not have occurred if he had not been so drunk. The judge described how Bartlett, while feeding Atticus with a bottle, became enraged when the baby struggled to feed and responded by violently shaking him. This brief but brutal assault caused fatal injuries.
On the evening of the incident, Bartlett and Evelyn Ballentyne, Atticus’s mother, had spent time at a pub and comedy club before returning home intoxicated. Bartlett consumed approximately 8.5 pints of lager. During a moment when Ms. Ballentyne was briefly upstairs, Bartlett was left alone with Atticus. Upon her return, she found the baby unresponsive across Bartlett’s lap. Despite attempts to revive him and emergency medical intervention, Atticus succumbed to his injuries a week later, on July 23, 2022.

Medical experts confirmed that Atticus’s devastating injuries were consistent with vigorous shaking and that his rib fractures were caused by forceful gripping. The emotional impact of this loss resonated deeply with the family. Ms. Ballentyne expressed profound grief and ongoing anxiety caused by the devastating loss of her son, lamenting the milestones she and Atticus will never experience together. Her mother, Rachel Donovan, also shared her sorrow, expressing a longing for just one more day with Atticus and hope that he was spared from knowing the full horror of what occurred.
Bartlett’s defense acknowledged he had previously been a caring parent and argued that there was no premeditation or intent to kill, but the court found him responsible for the fatal attack. The judge’s decision to impose a life sentence underscores the severity and tragic nature of this case.
