Critical Appeal Launches to Protect Somerset’s Catcott Nature Reserve

Somerset Wildlife Trust has launched an urgent appeal to raise £535,000 to safeguard and enhance Catcott Nature Reserve, a prized natural area on the Somerset Levels. The Trust, which has managed Catcott since the late 1960s, aims to improve the reserve’s habitats and visitor facilities, ensuring this vital sanctuary remains accessible and thriving for both wildlife and the community.

Since the appeal began on August 6th, public generosity has already brought in over £160,000—nearly 30% of the target. These funds will support major projects including the purchase of connecting land to expand the reserve, habitat restoration, and improvements to visitor amenities.

Becky Fisher, Head of Engagement at Somerset Wildlife Trust, said, “We’re thrilled with the encouraging start to this campaign. It’s clear that people cherish the opportunity to connect with nature at Catcott. The funds raised will not only enhance the experience for visitors but will also significantly benefit the diverse wildlife through land acquisition and habitat enhancement. We’re grateful for all the support so far, but there’s still much to be done. We urge everyone who can to donate and then come and enjoy this special place.”

Catcott Nature Reserve is a rich mosaic of hay meadows, wet woodland, grassland, and fen, internationally recognized for its outstanding birdlife. Visitors may spot otters, water voles, dragonflies, and the elusive European eel among its thriving ecosystems. As a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a RAMSAR wetland, Catcott’s landscapes change with the seasons—winter floods attract flocks of teal and wigeon, while the drier spring months create crucial breeding grounds for lapwing and snipe. The reserve’s Lows bird hide offers unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities.
