Several individuals from Somerset found themselves on the wrong side of the law and are now serving time for their criminal activities. Here’s a look at some of the notable cases from August 2024.
MICHAEL DRAKE
Michael Drake, 46, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering 24-year-old Jordan Simcock. The fatal argument led to Drake repeatedly striking Simcock with a weight plate, resulting in fatal injuries.
BRIAN WATT
Brian Watt, 34, was jailed for eight months after causing disruption on a flight from Glasgow to Tenerife. His drunken behavior, including smoking in the plane’s toilets and urinating in front of other passengers, forced the plane to be diverted to Bristol.

JAMES OWEN AND ELLEN RAE
James Owen, 55, was sentenced to eight years behind bars while Ellen Rae, 52, received a two-year sentence for raping and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old in their home. The victim was plied with alcohol before the assault occurred.
JASON BARRY FRANCIS
Involved in a violent protest, Jason Barry Francis punched a police officer and was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison for violent disorder and assault of an emergency worker.
SCOTT LIPPIATT
Scott Lippiatt, 23, led police on a dangerous chase, driving a stolen vehicle the wrong way down the M4. He pleaded guilty to multiple offenses and was jailed for 17 months.
DAVID EGGLETON
David Eggleton, 71, was sentenced to five and a half years for defrauding his aunt of over £600,000 by misusing his position as power of attorney.
JESSICA HIGGS
Jessica Higgs, 20, was involved in a fatal crash on the A303, resulting in the deaths of Thelma Huse and Tony Mist. Higgs was found guilty of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drugs and received a three-year, five-month sentence.
