Crews Battle Intense House Fire in Burnham-on-Sea Sparked by Open Fireplace

A house fire in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, rapidly escalated after flames spread from an open fireplace, causing extensive damage and drawing a multi-unit emergency response on Thursday, January 15.

The fire was first reported around 2:25 pm, with calls flooding into emergency control as smoke and flames engulfed the property on College Street. Multiple fire crews quickly arrived, confronting a property described as “well alight.”

Social media footage captured thick smoke billowing from the house, prompting authorities to cordon off parts of the street for public safety.

Firefighters divided the scene into sectors and battled the fire tirelessly for over two hours, utilizing four sets of breathing apparatus as they worked to contain and extinguish the blaze.

According to the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the fire originated on the ground floor, centered around an open fireplace in the lounge.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident. The fire inflicted significant destruction, with the lounge suffering 90% fire damage and complete smoke damage, while the remainder of the property endured 80% smoke damage.

The fire service response involved multiple appliances dispatched from Burnham-on-Sea, Bridgwater, and Cheddar, alongside an incident command unit and supporting officers from surrounding areas, demonstrating a robust collaborative effort.

By 4:45 pm, firefighters confirmed the blaze was extinguished, bringing the intense operation to a close and allowing investigators and residents to assess the aftermath.
