‘Crashed Plane’ Airbnb Hidden in Somerset Woods Earns Glowing Reviews

Tucked away in the serene Somerset countryside, an extraordinary Airbnb is captivating guests with its unique charm—a ‘crashed plane’ experience split into two halves, offering a true “real-life Castaway” escape. This one-of-a-kind accommodation features parts of a former Lufthansa Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, creatively arranged to mimic a marooned aircraft scene deep in the woods.

Purchased in two separate pieces on eBay, the plane was carefully transported over a five-hour journey and reassembled on site. The interior boasts authentic airplane seats sourced from the original aircraft, with a luxurious first-class carriage serving as a master suite and an economy-class section accommodating two camp beds.

Despite the rustic surroundings, visitors have not faced any survival challenges. Instead, the stay has proven to be a hit, garnering a flawless 100% five-star rating. Owner Martyn Baker’s inspiration came from a Christmas storm that damaged a caravan he once rented out. Seeking something more distinctive, he found the twin parts of the glamping pod online and purchased them for a combined £17,000.

Martyn shares, “A lot of people opt for shepherd huts in the woods, but this is genuinely unique. People really love it because it’s unlike anything else.”

The Airbnb listing invites guests to “charter a stay in a first-class fuselage with a wood-fired hot tub set in tranquil woodland.” Visitors can immerse themselves in a sleek, modern interior in the first-class cabin, featuring a plush double bed, cozy seating, and soft lighting. Meanwhile, the economy section offers cooking amenities, a log burner, a TV, and a versatile dining space that transforms into sleeping quarters.

Transporting the aircraft components from Eastbourne to Somerset over 200 miles, Martyn recounts the amusing conversations and curious looks as the plane pieces navigated roundabouts and motorways.

Although not intended to resemble a crash site, the isolated location and split design lend an authentic “castaway” vibe that guests love. The plane was assembled on site in just two days, with original seats and exposed cabin features adding to its authenticity.

Available to rent for £125 per night (plus Airbnb fees), the plane’s unique allure shines through glowing guest reviews. One calls it “unique & brilliant fun” they’ll never forget, while another describes it as “a true hidden gem” that offers a homely yet far-from-everyday experience. Many praise the quirky and thoughtful design, highlighting it as a remarkably comfortable and memorable alternative to traditional accommodations.

With amenities like a hot tub, barbecue, and ample seating, guests enjoy the perfect blend of novelty and comfort. And in case of concern, Martyn reassures visitors, “There are no snakes on this plane.”
