Craig Overton’s Heroics Propel Somerset to Sixth Consecutive T20 Finals Day

Defending champions Somerset secured their place in a sixth consecutive Vitality Blast Finals Day thanks to an extraordinary performance by Craig Overton. His career-best innings of 78 not out off just 30 balls, including eight fours and five sixes, powered Somerset to a dramatic two-wicket win against Yorkshire at Headingley, chasing a target of 162.

Facing a dire situation at 82 for eight in the 15th over, Overton’s explosive hitting revived Somerset’s hopes. He scored 22 runs off the final over bowled by Matthew Revis, sealing victory with a ball to spare. Overton’s all-round contribution was definitive – after taking two wickets earlier in the match, he was instrumental in both bowling Yorkshire out for 161 for nine and chasing down the total.

Jake Ball supported the attack with three wickets for 30 runs, while Somerset’s disciplined bowling restricted Yorkshire after a promising start. Yorkshire’s opener Adam Lyth top-scored with 64, powering his side early with aggressive hitting, but his efforts ultimately fell short as key wickets tumbled.

Choosing to bat first, Yorkshire began brightly with boundaries but were soon pegged back, ending the powerplay at 45 for three. Moeen Ali, promoted to opener, was dismissed for a golden duck, while Ball and Overton took crucial wickets to derail the Yorkshire innings.

Lyth and George Hill shared a vital 58-run stand for the fourth wicket, stabilizing the innings briefly. However, their dismissals triggered a skid as Somerset tightened control, conceding just four extras throughout. Daniel Sams, Ball, and Riley Meredith chipped in with important wickets, stifling Yorkshire’s scoring momentum.

Chasing 162, Somerset suffered early setbacks as wickets fell regularly. Key catches and smart bowling from Yorkshire put Somerset under pressure, but Overton rose to the occasion, racing to his half-century in just 22 balls. His fearless strokeplay, including three leg-side sixes in the final over, turned the tide decisively.

Overton’s last single through cover clinched a memorable win, sending Somerset through to the Finals Day for a chance to claim their third title in four years. Their next challenge awaits in a morning semi-final against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston on Saturday.
