Crackdown on Speeding Drivers in Somerset Town

The town of Frome in Somerset is facing a significant problem with speeding and unsafe driving, leading to serious crashes on its roads. Concerned residents and local authorities are taking action to address the issue and improve road safety.

During a recent Frome Town Council meeting, the community discussed the impact of a severe collision on Rodden Road that resulted in a man being hospitalized on October 20. In response to these incidents, new speed indicator device (SID) signs are being implemented to discourage speeding, and volunteers are actively participating in efforts to address the problem.

Councillor Anita Collier, in collaboration with Avon & Somerset Police, emphasized the need for preventative measures to address the excessive speeding and unsafe driving behaviors that have been observed in various areas of Frome. A new group, the Rodden Road Speed and Safety Group, has been established to collect evidence and take proactive steps to improve road safety. Additionally, discussions have included proposals for measures such as introducing 20mph speed zones, pedestrian crossings, and double yellow lines to enhance safety.

However, implementing these measures comes with associated costs and logistical considerations. For instance, establishing a 20mph zone would require thorough data analysis and potential investments in speed calming measures, signage, and other infrastructure, posing financial challenges for the local council. The installation of pedestrian crossings and double yellow lines also involves specific processes and lead times.

Despite the complexities and financial implications, the community remains committed to finding solutions to the speeding problem. The community’s dedication is evident through initiatives such as the Mendip Community Speedwatch and the acquisition of additional SID units to monitor and gather data on speeding patterns.

The severity of the situation has prompted concerns from various stakeholders, including Ashley Reay from the Mendip Community Speedwatch, who expressed apprehension about the escalating speeding issues and the need for decisive action.

The efforts to address speeding and improve road safety are ongoing, with the community’s determination to mitigate the risks associated with excessive speeding and unsafe driving behaviors.
