Couple’s Tragic Loss Sparks Transformative Hospital Makeover

Following the heartbreaking loss of their young son, Ben, Nicky and Neil Halford MBE have transformed grief into a powerful force for good. Through their charity, Time Is Precious, they are leading major hospital refurbishment projects at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath — focused on creating welcoming, calming spaces for children, families, and patients.

Ben fought a courageous three-and-a-half-year battle with a brain tumour before passing away. In his honor, the Halfords founded Time Is Precious to enhance the hospital environment across the South West. Their efforts fund sensory and distraction equipment, reimagine clinical spaces, and provide crucial support for families navigating difficult times.

This year, the couple were awarded MBEs in the New Year Honours list, receiving their medals from the King at Windsor Castle in April. Neil Halford reflected, “Receiving the MBEs was deeply moving, but the true reward lies in continuing to support families who face similar challenges. Ben’s legacy lives on through this work, and we are incredibly proud of what Time Is Precious has accomplished. We couldn’t achieve this without our amazing supporters.”

The current projects at RUH include transforming the maternity unit’s Mary Ward reception and corridors into warmer, more relaxing areas where expectant families can connect in comfort. Additionally, the children’s emergency department is undergoing a full redesign — starting with the waiting rooms — to reduce anxiety through soothing décor and engaging distractions.

Time Is Precious has already completed a number of upgrades at RUH and extends its support to Bristol Children’s Hospital, Yeovil Hospital, and recently, Frome Community Hospital. Discussions are underway to further expand into facilities in Paulton and other locations.

To support these vital projects, Time Is Precious invites the local community to get involved through fundraising initiatives such as the “Walk for Smiles” family walk and participation in the Bath Half Marathon. Nicky Halford expressed her gratitude: “Every small contribution makes a difference — whether it’s taking part in our walk, hosting events, or even a simple dress-down day at work. Together, we can bring comfort and hope to children, families, and adults facing incredibly tough journeys.”
