Following the devastating loss of their young son Ben, Nicky and Neil Halford MBE have turned their grief into a powerful force for good. Through their charity, Time Is Precious, they are driving major refurbishments at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath to create more soothing, welcoming environments for patients and their families.
Ben fought a brave three-and-a-half-year battle with a brain tumour before passing away, inspiring his parents to improve hospital experiences for others facing similar challenges. Since its inception, Time Is Precious has funded vital distraction equipment and transformed clinical spaces across the South West to ease anxiety and provide emotional support.
This year, the Halfords were honoured with MBEs, presented by the King at Windsor Castle, in recognition of their remarkable contributions.

Neil Halford reflects, “Receiving the MBE was deeply moving, but the true reward lies in continuing Ben’s legacy—helping families when they need it most. Our charity’s progress wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support from the community.”
The latest initiatives at RUH focus on two key areas: the maternity unit and the children’s emergency department. Mary Ward, the hospital’s maternity wing, will be revamped from reception through corridors, creating a warmer, calming space where families share precious moments, like the first meeting between siblings and newborns.
Meanwhile, the children’s emergency department will undergo a complete transformation, starting with waiting rooms and eventually covering the entire area. The redesign aims to minimize stress for children by incorporating soothing décor and enhanced distraction resources.
Time Is Precious’s ongoing efforts extend beyond RUH, supporting Bristol Children’s Hospital, Yeovil Hospital, and newly added facilities like Frome Community Hospital, with plans to expand further to places like Paulton.
To fund these vital projects, the charity calls on the local community to join efforts such as the “Walk for Smiles” family walk, the Bath Half Marathon, and other fundraising activities. Every contribution, whether big or small, directly improves the experiences of children, families, and adults navigating difficult times.
Nicky Halford adds, “We appreciate all forms of support—from sponsored walks and quizzes to something as simple as a dress down day at work. Together, we are making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
