Couple Ditch 9-to-5 Grind to Live Like Kings, Saving £2,000 a Month

Shane Williams and Sarah Camden, both 29, grew fed up with their demanding nine-to-five roles—Shane as an estate agent and Sarah in banking—that saw them working a combined 90 hours per week with precious little time together. Seeking a change, the couple made a bold move three years ago, leaving their Hereford homes behind to live and work on a campsite in Wrexham.

Their new lifestyle slashes their monthly expenses drastically. By working 40 hours over five days tending to the campsite—mowing grass, greeting guests, and handling maintenance—they each bring home £1,900 monthly. In exchange, they receive free accommodation on-site in their caravan, plus water and electricity at no cost. Although they took a pay cut, Shane says, “We have more free money now and can afford four holidays in 2025 alone.”

Initially living in a gifted caravan, the couple recently upgraded to a £7,000 model and travel extensively in a £13,000 campervan they purchased in September 2024. This new freedom lets them enjoy outings, dining out, and spontaneous trips—luxuries they found too costly before.

“We were sick of getting home at 5 p.m. only to have a couple of hours together before repeating the grind,” Shane shares. “Now, we work side by side and get more quality time daily. We save roughly £2,000 each month and truly live like kings—without limiting ourselves.”

Last year, they earned promotions to head wardens, adding £400 to their monthly income each while managing the warden team. After a four-month sabbatical creating social media content, they returned to their previous roles, still relishing many campsite perks like free pool access and discounts at the bar.

While off-season can be chilly and damp in the caravan, the couple embrace the outdoors for much of the year. They’ve personalized their living space with cozy touches like fairy lights around the awning, and recently welcomed an eight-month-old English cocker spaniel puppy named Sunnie.

Their plan looks ahead: saving to buy a rental property that others will pay off, providing financial security, while they continue their unconventional lifestyle. Friends and family often visit for free stays at the five-star campsite, sharing in their journey.

By swapping the traditional workweek for campsite living, Shane and Sarah prove that embracing simplicity and prioritizing quality of life can lead to both happiness and financial success.
