Countryfile’s John Craven Shares Emotional Funeral Wishes and Yorkshire Affection

John Craven, the beloved presenter of the long-running BBC show Countryfile, opened up about his final wishes and his enduring love for Yorkshire during the most recent episode of the series.

Having been the face of Countryfile since 1989, Craven took viewers on a captivating tour of Yorkshire’s scenic and historic spots. He expressed a deeply personal wish to have his ashes scattered in one of these treasured locations, underscoring his strong connection to the region.

The episode aired on Sunday, 17 August, journeyed through the picturesque town of Knaresborough, renowned for its ancient castles, towering cliffs, and mysterious caves—often described as a “hidden gem.” As Craven navigated the River Nidd, he shared his passion for the area’s rich heritage and natural beauty.

At 84 years old, Craven has spent over three decades presenting the countryside documentary series. His affection for Yorkshire remains steadfast, despite living away from the county since his twenties. He frequently visits family there and holds fond memories of places like Wharfedale and Otley Chevin—areas he once enjoyed cycling with friends.

In a candid moment from a 2019 interview with The Yorkshire Post, Craven revealed, “Still one of my favourite places in the world is Wharfedale and Otley Chevin… I’d like to come home and have my ashes scattered in Yorkshire, maybe on the top of Otley Chevin.”

During the latest episode, Craven also explored local traditions, including the historic Holgate windmill and an innovative, solar-powered micro-distillery transforming traditional grains into eco-friendly spirits. He revisited Countryfile’s archives, celebrating timeless crafts and rural customs that define countryside life.

Despite a lifelong dream of living by the sea, Craven confessed he never owned a coastal home. Now residing in Oxfordshire, over an hour from the nearest shoreline, he finds solace in his garden by playing recordings of the sea, conjuring the coastal atmosphere he yearns for.

Known not only for Countryfile but also for his 17 years presenting the children’s news program Newsround, John Craven remains a cherished figure in British broadcasting, showing no sign of retiring anytime soon.
