Council’s Financial Crisis Raises Concerns Over Somerset Recycling Centres

Residents of Somerset are expressing their worries about the possible closure of several recycling centers in the county, as the local council grapples with a financial emergency and seeks to make savings from the waste budget.

During the recent South Somerset local community network meeting, Councillor Dixie Darch, lead member for environment and climate change, acknowledged the importance of the recycling centers to the community. She emphasized the necessity to find savings from the waste budget due to the current financial crisis but expressed reluctance in shutting down any of the recycling centers.

Darch revealed that negotiations with the council’s contractor, Biffa, were ongoing and emphasized that while the possibility of closure exists, a final decision has not been reached. She also assured that any proposals for closure would be subject to a full consultation with the public.

The potential closures have raised concerns about increased fly-tipping and flooding, with residents apprehensive about the possible adverse consequences in their communities. Additionally, questions were raised about the impact on garden waste management and the potential increase in air pollution if the recycling centers were to shut down.

Kirsty Larkins, the service director for climate, environment, and sustainability, highlighted the council’s plans to engage in wider consultation on recycling practices. She acknowledged the resistance to the closures but stated that the council was considering various approaches to mitigate the impact through negotiation and additional financial support.

Darch reiterated the significance of addressing these issues effectively, especially in rural areas, and emphasized the need for a well-structured and meaningful consultation process involving the public.
