Council to Purchase 15 Homes to Tackle Emergency Housing Needs

Somerset Council has announced plans to purchase 15 council homes dedicated to emergency accommodation, using a £3.3 million underspend from its Housing Revenue Account. This investment aims to alleviate the pressure caused by lengthy waiting lists for social housing while providing better quality housing options for families in urgent need.

The new properties will be strategically located in areas with the highest demand, offering more stable and secure alternatives to temporary solutions like bed and breakfasts. Council Leader Bill Revans emphasized the council’s commitment to addressing the ongoing housing crisis and providing safe, reliable shelter during families' transitions to permanent homes.

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Member for Communities, highlighted the importance of affordable housing as a fundamental right, noting that the additional council homes will reduce reliance on temporary accommodation and foster dignity and stability for affected families.

Additionally, council members passed a motion urging the Government to grant local authorities increased long-term powers and funding to enable the delivery of more affordable and sustainable housing solutions.

Since the Liberal Democrats assumed control of Somerset Council, the authority has successfully delivered over 2,600 new homes in a single year, including 900 affordable units. This latest development forms a key component of the council’s broader strategy to build inclusive, sustainable communities for all residents.
