Somerset Council has announced plans to purchase 15 council houses to provide emergency accommodation for local families in urgent need. The £3.3 million funding will come from an underspend in the council’s Housing Revenue Account, ensuring better quality housing options are available in areas with the highest demand.
Led by the Liberal Democrat administration, the council aims to offer more stable and secure alternatives to temporary solutions like bed and breakfasts, which often lack the comfort and permanence families require. This initiative targets reducing long waiting lists for social housing and improving living conditions for those facing homelessness.
Cllr Bill Revans, Leader of Somerset Council, emphasized the urgency of the housing crisis: “This investment is a crucial step towards helping families find safe, secure places to stay while we work toward permanent housing solutions. It shows our commitment to using every available resource to build stronger, fairer communities.”

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Member for Communities, Housing Revenue Account, Culture, and Equalities and Diversity, highlighted the council’s dedication to affordable housing: “Everyone deserves a decent, affordable home. Investing £3.3 million into council housing demonstrates our practical approach to providing stability and dignity to families, ensuring they are not stuck in temporary accommodation for extended periods.”
Moreover, the council passed a motion urging the Government to grant local authorities the long-term funding and powers necessary to increase the supply of affordable and sustainable homes. Since the Liberal Democrats took control, over 2,600 new homes have been delivered in one year, including 900 affordable properties.
This new purchase initiative reinforces Somerset Council’s broader strategy to foster sustainable, inclusive communities where all residents have the opportunity to thrive.
