Peasedown St John Primary School in Somerset has unveiled its newly refurbished cookery room, proudly named the ‘Cookery Corner,’ made possible by a generous donation from the Parent School Association. The updated kitchen provides a modern and spacious environment that supports whole-group food technology lessons.
Headteacher Ruth Noall expressed her enthusiasm: “We can now deliver our food technology lessons in an up-to-date kitchen that accommodates full class participation.”
Year 4 pupils were among the first to experience the upgraded facilities, creating biscuits with the guidance of Annie Kershaw, the school’s design technology leader, and teaching assistant Karen James.

The school integrates cooking into its design technology curriculum, focusing on the ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ framework. This approach develops students' technical skills and creativity by encouraging them to consider both innovation and the practicality of kitchen equipment. Lessons also emphasize healthy eating and nutrition, ensuring children understand how to prepare food that is both tasty and nutritious.
Ruth added, “Cooking is a vital life skill that helps pupils feed themselves and others affordably and healthily, now and in the future. Our food and nutrition lessons always have a meaningful outcome, like organizing a class picnic.”
Established in 1913, Peasedown St John Primary School currently educates around 420 children aged 2 to 11 years, continuing its long tradition of fostering learning and growth.
