‘Cookery Corner’ Debuts at Somerset Primary School Thanks to Generous Donation

Peasedown St John Primary School in Somerset has unveiled its newly refurbished cookery room, made possible by a generous donation from the Parent School Association.

The upgraded space, now known as the ‘Cookery Corner,’ offers modern facilities where students can engage in food technology lessons more effectively. Ruth Noall, the school’s headteacher, expressed her enthusiasm: “We are delighted to provide an up-to-date kitchen environment that accommodates entire groups for hands-on food preparation.”

To mark the opening, Year 4 pupils put the new facilities to the test by baking biscuits under the guidance of Annie Kershaw, the school’s design technology leader, and Karen James, a teaching assistant.

The school’s design technology curriculum emphasizes the ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ approach, fostering children’s technical skills and creativity. This method not only supports their design projects but also enriches their cooking and nutrition lessons, encouraging students to understand the importance of nutrition and healthy eating alongside practical cooking techniques.

Ruth highlighted the broader significance of this initiative: “Learning to cook is an essential life skill that empowers our pupils to prepare nutritious and affordable meals for themselves and others. We aim to give every food and nutrition unit a meaningful context, such as organizing a class picnic.”

Founded in 1913, Peasedown St John Primary School currently educates around 420 children aged 2 to 11, continuing its commitment to providing valuable learning opportunities for its students.
