Controversy Surrounds Approval of New Bath Dump

The Bath and North East Somerset Council is considering plans for a new household waste recycling facility in the west of Bath, which has sparked controversy among locals. The proposed facility at Locksbrook Road aims to replace the current Bath Recycling Centre on Midland Road with a modern waste management system.

Despite planning officers recommending the approval of the new facility, residents are vehemently opposed to its location, citing concerns over increased flood risk, environmental impact, and the accessibility for elderly and disabled individuals. The group “Stop the Tip” has expressed deep disappointment in the recommendation for approval and urged the planning committee to reconsider the decision in light of these significant issues.

Critics argue that the west of Bath already has access to a recycling center in Keynsham and propose that the new facility be situated on the east side of the city. However, planning officers have defended the chosen location, emphasizing its proximity to the existing facility and the benefits of utilizing a previously developed site within the city.

In response to the anticipated approval, the “Stop the Tip” group has vowed to pursue legal action through a judicial review, emphasizing the potential waste of public funds and urging the council to reconsider its plans. Despite amendments made to the initial proposal following community feedback, the controversy continues to loom over the council’s decision-making process.

The proposed dump at Locksbrook aims to handle various waste categories such as bulky items, soft furnishings, garden waste, and recyclables but will not accommodate certain materials like electronics, hazardous waste, and DIY waste, unlike the current facility at Midland Road.

The council is set to hold a meeting on April 9, where the decision on the proposed facility will be made.
