A new housing development proposal has reignited controversy in a Somerset village where plans to build homes on a cherished green field have faced opposition from local residents.
Previously, Persimmon withdrew their initial proposal to construct 116 homes on Farleigh Fields in Backwell, Somerset. However, the company has now resubmitted a re-designed proposal for a slightly reduced 90-home development after addressing feedback from council officers.
The proposed development, which includes 27 affordable units, seeks to address concerns raised by local residents and officials. It will be designed with an emphasis on environmental sustainability, featuring fully electric homes, air source heat pumps, and infrastructure for electric vehicle charging. Furthermore, the plan includes provisions for an “ecological buffer” and improvements to the neighboring field’s ecology.

Despite the redesign, opposition to the proposal remains strong within the village, with concerns about infrastructure strain, flooding, and the level of changes made since the previous withdrawal of the planning application.
The proposed development’s impact on the local landscape and infrastructure continues to spark objections, with five lodged on the council’s planning portal and no comments in support.
