The Knights Templar Swimming Pool in Watchet, Somerset, a vital hub for generations of swimmers, is set for a fresh start after a successful community fundraising campaign. On June 16, Rachel Gilmour, MP for Tiverton and Minehead, joined campaigners to celebrate reaching the ambitious target of £45,000 for vital refurbishment work.
Since its opening in 1993, the pool—owned by Knights Templar Community Church School and Nursery—has been a cornerstone of the town’s education and recreation. However, years of heavy use left it in need of urgent repairs and upgrades, including energy-efficient equipment to reduce running costs.
The Splashout Fundraising Committee, alongside Watchet Town Council and several local trusts, worked tirelessly to secure the funds necessary to preserve this valued resource. Committee leader Jim Butterworth was joined by Jennifer Thomas, vice chair of governors, headteacher Laura Weaver, and town councillor Sean Terrett at the celebration.

The committee expressed their gratitude: “We’ve done it together! The incredible generosity and spirit of our community have enabled us to raise the funds needed to repair the pool and ensure its future. Individual donors and local supporters, along with trusts, have shown the power of standing united for a common cause.”
For over 31 years, the pool has taught thousands of children to swim safely and supports not only the school but also two local swimming clubs. It remains available for public hire, with bookings through www.knightstemplarswimmingpool.uk.
MP Rachel Gilmour praised the community’s achievement, saying, “It’s wonderful to see such dedication and teamwork. The Knights Templar Swimming Pool is a vital part of Watchet, supporting students and residents alike. I’m proud that my office could help with the fundraising efforts—it’s a clear example of what communities can achieve when they come together.”
