The beloved hydrotherapy pool at Compass Wellbeing in Taunton faces closure unless urgent repair funding of £35,000 is secured. This essential facility, operated by the local charity Compass Disability Services, supports nearly 100 users weekly and remains fully booked months in advance.
Michelle Edwards, centre manager, guided Taunton Deane MP Gideon Amos on a tour of the pool, emphasizing its crucial role in the community. “As the only publicly bookable hydrotherapy pool nearby, we are relied upon heavily, and bookings are full until January,” she explained.
Many users prefer this pool over others due to its welcoming environment and accessibility. “Our users often feel uncomfortable at other pools because of noise, accessibility issues, behavioral concerns, or temperature differences. Hydrotherapy is vital for pain relief, rehabilitation, and emotional wellbeing. It offers a unique sense of freedom,” Edwards added.

The charity has launched a fundraising drive that has already raised £12,000 towards the £35,000 goal, boosted by strong support from local residents and businesses. Edwards expressed optimism: “The community’s response has been incredible. We are confident we can reach our target and keep this vital service open.”
MP Gideon Amos, an active supporter of the campaign, praised Compass Wellbeing and pledged to help secure additional funds. “Seeing firsthand how booked up the pool is, it’s clear we must do everything possible to prevent its closure. The team at Compass is doing fantastic work, and I will work with local businesses and pursue grant opportunities to support them.”
With continued community effort and generous donations, the hydrotherapy pool aims to remain a lifeline for those who depend on it for physical and emotional healing.
