The planned re-routing of Yeovil’s longstanding Number 11 bus service has sparked uproar among the town’s elderly and disabled residents, with fears that many individuals will be left isolated and without vital transportation options.
Scheduled to take effect on Saturday, April 20, the changes come as a result of the service’s overlap with the commercially-operated Number 51, prompting Somerset Council to alter the route while continuing to fund the 11 bus, operated by South West Coaches. A spokesperson for the council emphasized that the new timetable and route for the 11 will be available soon.
Campaigners, however, argue that the proposed modifications essentially equate to a cancellation for numerous users. Expressing concerns about the impact on vulnerable groups in the town, Sue Legg, who has been gathering signatures for a petition, highlighted the potential repercussions of the decision.

In particular, the residents of Whitemead, predominantly comprising pensioners and disabled individuals, are anticipated to face significant challenges due to the lack of direct service, potentially hindering access to essential amenities and medical facilities. Over 547 people have already signed an online petition on Change.org within a week, illustrating the widespread concern over the issue.
Furthermore, Devon Clarke, an advocate for the elderly and disabled community in Yeovil, stressed the vital role of the Number 11 bus route in facilitating essential travel to supermarkets and medical appointments, emphasizing the profound impact of its potential elimination.
Responding to apprehensions regarding the reliability of alternative services, Somerset Council confirmed ongoing discussions with bus operators and assured residents that efforts are being made to provide clarity on the matter.
While the new Number 11 route is expected to extend coverage to areas currently underserved by the 51, specific details are yet to be disclosed.
